Jonathan Candeloro tests prototype equipment designed by Liebherr Aerospace. An essential link between the design office and mass production.
Jonathan Candeloro works in an high-secured building at the Liebherr Aerospace industrial site in Toulouse. Because this is where the tests are conducted, and it is a crucial phase of the research and development of this aeronautical equipment manufacturer, specializing in air systems, flight control systems and landing gear.

After arriving in the company in 2012 and obtaining a degree in Industrial Control and automatic regulation and a first professional experience of 18 months as a maintenance agent, this 28 year-old man from Toulouse is a development test technician in the Vibration and Acoustics department.
His main working tools are the following ones : two test benches that put equipment in flight situation, and outside this confined room, several screens to monitor the tests in terms of vibration and make sure everything is in compliance. “I work 36.40 hours a week,” says Jonathan Candeloro. In the morning, when I arrive, I look at the schedule, before receiving a piece of equipment from the design office, that wants to ensure, before producing this serial piece, that it will keep its promises regarding vibration. , temperature, pressure, etc. I then look at the test process, install the equipment on the test bench, instrument it by positioning sensors and then call the person who asked me to check it if everything was well. I finish programming the pilot station, and during the test I look on a screen if the equipment reacts correctly. At the end, I return the equipment to the design office,  then I validate or not the test, I analyze all the data and I write a report. ”

Alertness, discipline and communication.

As a true link between the design office and mass production and a measurement specialist, the test technician must be very alert to detect the slightest anomaly on the prototype entrusted to him. As Jonathan Candeloro explains, it is a job that requires a lot of discipline and thoroughness, but also good communication and a real will to work in teams. “We talk to many people around a trial. You mustn’t hesitate to warn someone if there is a problem”. The fact of enjoying contact with people is essential !
What type of equipment go through his hands? Valves, exchangers, climatic groups, thermal and electric engines … in short, all the equipment developed by Liebherr Aerospace transits in this building. After the manufacturing phase, the latter is integrated into airplanes and helicopters in air conditioning, but also in cars and in trains.
The duration of the tests is very variable, depending on the size and complexity of the equipment. And for a year now, our test technician has been working on a new war machine : an high-efficient 23-ton vibration bench, which allows the company to carry out all the vibration environment tests internally that are required for equipment certification. “This new bench has made us independent,” says Jonathan Candeloro. Tests are scheduled until mid-2018! Alongside the two vibration test benches, 27 test cells are available to subject these prototypes to all operating situations: anechoic chambers, system benches, high altitude caissons …

“We must find solutions”

What does Jonathan Candeloro prefer in his job? “I appreciate doing these tests with different equipment. It’s never the same task. We are not robots : we must think, look for problems and find solutions. What he likes the least is a rather widespread problem in the business world : “the lack of communication, for example when equipment hasn’t been delivered”. Concerning the salary, test technicians at Liebherr Aerospace are paid between 27,000 and 33,000 euros gross per year, plus a collective variable related to the company’s economic results.
How does he see his evolution? “Today I want to improve myself where I am,” says the test technician. But in the end, why not do a training to become an engineer ? It is really possible to evolve. As for his company, he says he’s really happy with it : with a little less than 1300 employees on two sites in Occitania, Liebherr Aerospace, subsidiary of the aeronautics and rail division of the Liebherr group, is part of a family group. You can feel it through the state of mind.
